What’s a Murphy Cup/Float?

Simplify hydrometer readings with this revolutionary tool, offered only by Smoky Lake! Give yourself the peace of mind that every hydrometer reading you take is *BAM* right on the money. It won’t matter what temperature your syrup sample is, the Murphy Compensation Cup/Float enables quick, precise readings every time. You’ll never have to scratch your head at a confusing paper compensation chart ever again.

For density testing during the bottling process, we recommend the Murphy Float. This model is designed to float directly within a vessel of syrup. Then, you will float your hydrometer along side it to take your reading.

In contrast, if you are going to be density testing while you are boiling on your evaporator, then you should select the Murphy Cup. With this option, your syrup sample and hydrometer are placed inside the cup to take a reading.
