Understanding Tubing Fittings

January 9, 2020

The article below gives a quick description of each type of fitting. At the bottom of the page, you can see each of these fittings in action.

Types of Fittings and Their Purpose

Example ProductGeneral NameDescription
DSD Spout, Blue, 90-degree angle[A]
Spout
The spout will connect the tree to your dropline tubing.

Each spout will have TWO sizes listed in spout specs:
TAP HOLE SIZE — typically either 5/16” or 1/4“.
TUBING SIZE COMPATIBILITY — options are either 5/16” or 3/16
(See part A in the photos below)
DSD T-Pin Connector for 5/16 Tubing[B]
Dropline Tee
This Tee contains three barbed connections. All three connections are hollow. This allows sap to flow from the tree’s dropline into the lateral line. It also allows sap from the upstream trees to pass through the Tee on its way to the collection tank.
(See part B in the photos below)
End Line Tee, 5/16", D&G[C]
Endline Tee
On the last tree on a lateral line, some folks may choose to use an “Endline Tee” rather than a regular Dropline Tee. Just like the Dropline Tee, the Endline Tee contains three barbed connections. However, only TWO out of the three connections allow sap to flow and the third barb is plugged. This allows sap to flow from the LAST tree’s dropline into the lateral line.
(See part C in the photos below)

As of 2022, Smoky Lake has discontinued carrying the Endline Tee. Instead, we recommend using a regular Dropline Tee at each tree. This just keeps things simpler for set up.

End of Line Slider
[D]
Endline Loop or
End of Line Slider
These types of fittings are used to terminate the lateral line at the end tree and hold the tubing tight.
(See part D in the photos below)
90º Tubing Saddle[E]
Saddles
These are used in larger tubing systems to connect a lateral line to a main line. They are available in a couple different styles (90º connection vs straight connection).
