Each year, as part of the tree’s healing process, a diamond shaped stain develops inside the tree around the tap hole. What happens if you tap within that stained area the following season? The results may surprise you!

Conclusion: Avoid Tapping Too Close To Old Tap Holes.

Rule of Thumb: Tap at least 2″ to the left or right of an old tap hole AND at least 12″ above or below an old tap hole.
