Tapping Too Close To Old Tap Holes

March 25, 2020

LAST Year’s Tap Hole Can Affect THIS Year’s Sap Yield.

Jim and Angela Schumacher do an experiment to show what happens when you tap too close to a prior season’s tap hole.

Each year, as part of the tree’s healing process, a diamond shaped stain develops inside the tree around the tap hole. What happens if you tap within that stained area the following season? The results may surprise you!

Conclusion: Avoid Tapping Too Close To Old Tap Holes.

Rule of Thumb: Tap at least 2″ to the left or right of an old tap hole AND at least 12″ above or below an old tap hole.

In this experiment, we show the dramatic difference when you tap too close to older tap holes.
