When Should I Tap My Trees?

There are a few different tools you can use to remove the spout from the tree:
![]() | Pruno Spout Remover Tool |
![]() | Standard Hammer (Use the back claw to pull the spout out) |
![]() | Slide Hammer (This tool would be used to remove legacy tubing spouts which would be harder to grab onto with other standard tools. Smoky Lake does not sell this product.) |
Gently pry out the tap without damaging the bark.
The tap hole will heal itself. Some sap may continue to drip from the tree as the tree works to heal itself. This is normal. Do NOT plug the tap hole.
If you have reusable taps — such as the Smoky Lake Stainless Steel Spouts— clean the taps with hot water, let air dry completely and store until next season.
