Extending the Season: Jake Dudley on Birch Syrup

When Kelley and Brian traded corporate careers for 40 acres of woodland in Willington, CT, they weren’t just chasing a dream — they were rescuing land, nurturing wildlife, and carrying forward a family tradition of maple sugaring.
At Forest Mill Farm, sustainability goes far beyond syrup bottles. Their sugarbush is certified Audubon Bird-Friendly, their trees are mapped with geospatial tech, and their evaporator is fueled with fallen timber from their own forest. Alongside syrup, they harvest raw honey, grow an acre of produce, and even supply syrup to schools across Connecticut. Every choice they make supports conservation, community, and quality.
We at Smoky Lake Maple Products have been honored to play a small role in this journey. Our artisans at Smoky Lake headquarters took great pride in handcrafting a Silverplate™ Evaporator just for them. The optimized design of the Silverplate Evaporator allows Forest Mill Farm to make the best use of their fuel resources and maximize boiling efficiency. It also drastically reduces the amount of time needed for boiling; turning all that sap into liquid gold.
Here’s to Kelley, Brian, and all the stewards of the land who remind us: when you support local syrup makers, you’re not just buying sweetness — you’re preserving traditions and protecting the woods for generations to come.
